1 - There are several hundred muscles in your leg, butt hip and thigh area.Not exercising these muscles properly will make your trouble spots worse and more pronounced. The right exercises that use these muscles in harmony with each other can bring definite results without spending unrealistic amounts of time for exercise and risking injury. ‘Balance’ is an important element of the proper program.

Regardless of your age or current physical state - you still have plenty of genetic potential that will allow for lots of improvements in your leg, butt hip and thigh area. But you have to go about it properly.
Your lower body is made up of several hundred muscles - muscles of many shapes and sizes that run in all different directions. So, when we speak of the four general areas of the leg, butt, hip and thigh region, we are really talking about a lot more than just those four problem areas.
And here is why this is so important for you to know.
If you want to make improvements in one or more of these areas - you will have to follow a program that addresses your lower body as a whole - because the way these muscles are situated and structured is so they can all work together as a unit.
This is why I never advise women to use isolation type machines - because this goes against the natural movement patterns of the body. (We all know people who have been injured while ‘exercising’, right?)
See, when a woman says something like, “I want to make my butt look better.” she is actually talking about several dozen muscles that affect the size, shape and firmness of her buttocks. She is not just referring to 1 or 2 muscles.
The same rule applies to the legs, hips and thighs.
Taking this one step further, “… make my butt look better.” can mean two very different things to two different women.
There are many sizes and shapes of the female leg, butt, hip and thigh area - and as such, there is an endless array of what women would consider their most stubborn problem areas.
Here are just a few:
Flat, saggy buttocks with some cellulite (maybe even a lot of cellulite)
Droopy, flabby buns with mushy shapeless legs and thighs
Stubborn inner thighs that rub together and look horrible
Skinny legs and very flat backside - a ‘boy-ish’ type lower body
Fat, lumpy thighs with saddle bags on the hips and a fat mushy butt
Loose, jiggly inner thighs with cellulite on the butt and backs of thighs
Disproportionately wide hips and thick, heavy thighs (’the dreaded pear shape’)
Now - there is a lot more I can add to this list - but I want to move on to the helpful stuff…
When I talk about all the variations of lower body issues for women - it would almost seem strange that many improvements can be made through a program that has many similarities when it is prescribed to several different female body types. Still true, nonetheless. The real differences are in the number of exercise sets, repetitions, use of dumbbells (or not) and food intake, otherwise known as nutrition habits.
At this point you’re probably wondering,
“How does this fitness guy know so much about the problems women have with their leg, butt, hip, and thigh areas?”
Here’s how…
Back in my competitive bodybuilding days, I had a knack for helping female fitness competitors fine tune their lower bodies for show time. I did this not with the typical squats, lunges and leg machines, but rather, with a complete series of body weight exercises that simply made amazing things happen in the leg, butt, hip, and thigh area.
Now, here is where it gets interesting. It’s 1991 and I’m getting myself ready for my fourth competition, Mr. SUNY Buffalo. I’m a bit disappointed with my lower body because I had squatted and lunged so much that I thought my knees were going to fall apart.
I just felt that the results should have been better with all that effort, but the truth was that the backs of my thighs were sort of flat, my butt just didn’t have the firm roundness that most male & female bodybuilders just naturally have, and to top it all off, I had what I called “male saddlebags”. They weren’t huge, but I had these areas at the widest part of my hips that stuck out-and they were soft to the touch - which really annoyed me.
Any way - one of my female gym pals, Jeannie, noticed my frustration and made a great suggestion,
“Joey, why don’t you do the “girly” exercises that you teach all of us women? If they work wonders for us they may do the trick for you too.”
I asked her, “What makes you think they’ll help my lower body?”
Jeannie said, “Your exercises help some women get rid of extra fat, flab and cellulite. They help very skinny, flat butted women build firm sexy curves in their lower bodies. And they help women with mushy, shapeless lower bodies get toned, shapely and strong. So what if you’re a guy – you still have the same muscles in your leg, butt, hip and thigh area as a woman.”
This never occurred to me-but it was a brilliant idea, so I began doing all the “girly” exercises instead of the heavy weights and machines.
And WOW - I knew they were going to make a dramatic difference from the first day I started doing them.
I felt areas of my lower body that I was never able to get to with the typical weight and machine type exercises. In less than two weeks the changes were quite visible. The back of my thighs were getting a more rounded look (I was ‘sculpting’ my hamstring muscles.)
My male ‘saddle-bags’ were disappearing and there was less unwanted ‘jiggle’ in my whole lower body. It was awesome.
Also, my glutes (butt muscles) were starting to get firmer, higher and rounder. I was actually quite surprised that these ‘un-traditional’ exercises worked on me, just like they worked for my female friends (none of which had the same exact type of lower body).
That was a true fitness learning experience for it and me would later prove to be extremely valuable because I would later apply these lower body exercise methods to the programs of all types of women with problematic lower bodies.
As a professional trainer I grew my business by specializing in training people (mostly women) in their homes and offices. The most valuable tool I had was the ability to create results delivering exercise programs with very little, and sometimes no, exercise equipment.
My forte became ‘helping women fix their lower body trouble spots and problem areas’.
It didn’t take long for me to realize that there were three general categories of women who wanted certain improvements in their leg, butt, and hip, and thigh area.
These three are:
A - Reduction (of Fat, Flab and Cellulite):B - Building (of Skinny Shapeless Legs, Thighs and Glutes/Buttocks):C - No Reduction, No Building - Just Toning, Firming, Shaping (maybe cellulite reduction):
Moving beyond these three main groups we then get into a wide array of subgroups.
Here are just a handful of them:
1. Reducing and shaping large legs while building the butt (if it’s too small and flat).
2. Toning loose, jiggly thighs and reducing wide hips and love handles.
3. Getting rid of cellulite and lifting the buns, while slimming and toning thick thighs.
4. Removing flab from inside the knees and tightening up the hips and butt.
5. Reducing thick, bulky calves and firming the entire upper thigh area.
6. Building up skinny calves and legs while reducing cellulite and flab in the upper thighs, hips, and buttocks.
A few of those may look like I’m talking about you.
Or maybe you would describe your lower body issues in a slightly different way - which is perfectly all right.
However, here is what’s most important when I talk about fixing, enhancing and improving your leg, butt, hip, and thigh area.
Regardless of your age, current level of fitness and previous bad experiences or failed attempts at self improvement…
You can make dramatic and permanent improvement in your leg, butt, and thigh area.
Here is why I can make such a bold promise to you.

* “Joey I’m in my early sixties, can I still make physical improvements or is it too late?” [If you are still alive-it’s not too late.]
* “I’ve had cellulite since I was a young girl. I’ve been told I will never get rid of it. Is that true, Joey?” [Not true at all. You’ve just come across people that have no clue how to help you.]
* “Joey, can I get my lower body back into shape, even after 2 pregnancies?” [Yes, you just have to go about it properly.]
* “Joey, I’ve heard that the only way to get a sexy lower body is with weights and machines. Do you agree with this?” [I’ll bet you heard this from someone who works at a gym filled with weights and machines.]
As I think about these things it truly helps to remind me that most women are “educated” by the TV news reports, deceptive advertisements, their hairdresser’s brother who used to be a trainer…
Or even a friend who is now an overnight health/fitness expert because they joined some crazy multi level marketing company that found a secret fruit in some cave in the Amazon Rainforest - and has turned it into a nutritional supplement line that can cure every ailment and give you your nineteen year old body back again.
Look, I can talk about this kind of stuff forever - but that won’t get you anywhere.
Unless you are talking with a qualified, credentialed and trustworthy expert - don’t believe a word of nonsense if it smells a bit fishy to you.
Always rely on your logic and common sense in your decision making - not someone else’s stories about ‘what they heard’ or what ’someone else taught them’.—————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

As my success grew in regards to helping women “fix” their lower bodies - I had to come up with a way that allowed them to maintain and keep all the improvements they had achieved.
They needed a way to take their lower butt, hip and thigh workouts on the road with them.
As a professional trainer that was challenging but necessary. See, most of my clients were not home during the whole year. They had the means to travel frequently to vacation spots, business destinations, and weekend homes.
These women needed to be able to take my instructions with them. So I created a photograph/instruction exercise manual with all of my best leg, butt, hip, and thigh exercises for all of my female clients.
I had only given this manual to two clients before they went on vacation - and an interesting thing happened with both of them.
One was visiting family “back home”; the other was traveling overseas to visit a college friend.
When they returned they each had a similar story – here it is:
“Joey, I hope you don’t mind, but my sister/friend asked if she could make a copy of your leg, butt, hip, and thigh manual, after she saw the changes I had made since the last time we saw each other. She was quite impressed and I figured you’d be ok with having your materials helping someone far away.”
Well, the light bulb went off - and this gave me a brilliant idea. I could start printing this manual and offer it to women who couldn’t afford me as their trainer or who lived too far away to work with me in person.
But then I started thinking - there are already dozens, maybe hundreds of books and videos that are supposed to help women with the leg, butt, hip, and thigh area - it might be a waste of time and money for me to create my own.
So, I asked one of my clients about this and she said,
